DiatonicHarmonica
What it is
A diatonic harmonica is a musical instrument with 10 holes. It is also called a harp or a mouth organ. Each hole has two reeds. One reed makes a musical note when you blow. The second reed makes a musiccal note when you draw. The most common harp comes with the notes equal to the white keys on a piano. This is in the key of C. The scale, DO RA ME FA SO LA TE DO begins on the note C. By using the black keys on a piano it is possible to have DO on any note. Harmonicas come in all the different keys, so to change key you have to use a different harp. You can blow or draw on a single hole or on several holes at once. Whatever group of holes you use will produce a pleasant harmonious sound called a chord. Hence the name Harmonica. The notes range over three scales or octaves. All the notes are present in the middle octave but some notes are missing in the lower octave. This is done so the lower chords are particularly harmonious. Nearly all popular songs can be played on the 10 hole diatonic harmonica. There is a chromatic harmonica which has a slider with which you can play all the notes and all the semitones in between. So the chromatic harmonica can play tunes in any key. But the lower chords on the chromatic harmonica are not quite as pleasant as those on the diatonic harp. The simple harmonica is a small instrument you can carry around with you and have fun expressing your musical feelings or entertaining others any place, anytime. Nevertheless, it is capable of producing serious music including jazz, blues and classical concert pieces.Links to Web Sites
